The California State Park system is hosting pilot programs at Riverside’s Citrus State Historical Park and San Francisco’s Presidio Park for their plan to revise the interpretation at these parks to be more inclusive of California’s diverse heritage and population. A team of public history students at CSUSB worked under Dr. Cathy Guidis at UC Riverside to support the preliminary research into the diverse histories of the Inland Empire. I visited the A.K. Smiley Library’s Heritage room to scan oral histories of citrus workers, and traveled to various archival holdings and museums in the region to uncover other oral history recordings and transcripts regarding citrus workers, the Bracero program, and immigration. Over the course of my stint as research assistant, I was also involved in community meetings between the research teams, the state park’s employees and docents, and local heritage/community groups.
